When Birds Attack, Attack ... Then Attack Some More

It wasn't pretty, but the birds handled the steelers, 15-6, on Sunday to move to 2-1 on the season. it was really a day for the defense and punter Sav Rocca - yes, the punter. the game had the feel of an NFC East smackdown.

The Defense rang up nine sacks, but had at least four or five others in their grasp that didn't go down as sacks b/c of penalties (Trent Cole facemask) or the fact that Big Ben was able to make it back to the line of scrimmage after feeling the pressure.

all that pressure? let's thank Asante Samuel ... with a lockdown corner, D coordinator Jim Johnson is able to send the house as much as he wants. How about that run defense? just sick. No. 1 in the NFL by nearly 20 yards! Props to the LBs Gaither, Bradley and Gocong. And No. 4 overall - even withe crazy MNF game at Dallas. Just wow ... And Brian Dawkins can still play the game. He may be a step slower, but he's got the savvy to make up for it. that strip and sack on Big Ben was incredible.

oh, and Sav R0cca? all he did was control the steelers' field position for the entire fourth quarter. When the birds went to a more conservative game plan in the second half and weren't moving the ball, Rocca launched punts of 64, 54 and 37 yards , pinning the Steelers back at their their 30-, 6-, and 7-yard lines, respectively.

the offense opened hot, hot, hot ... then hunt fumbled (on what looked like a helmet to helmet hit), westbrook went out, don left for a series, LJ was sidelined. Oh, and they started the game with out their all pro guard Shawn Andrews - and their top returning receiver Kevin Curtis. good teams find ways to win and they found a way to win. It would've been easy to fold up the tents and say screw it, we can't win, but they didn't. Pride and guts, for sure.

Reggie Brown's triumphant return? zero catches for zero yards. don looked his way twice, but it didn't look like Reggie expended too much effort in trying to catch the ball. same as it's always been with him ... give him a chance to step up and he'll drop it (pun intended).

the team has proven to me that they can adapt to the type of game being played ... The are competitive if the game is smash mouth or a shootout.

Think about it - the birds are one botched handoff from being 3-0.

Birds / Fightin' Quakers - Week III

Bring on the Steelers!

Sooooooooo, was monday's game vs. the Cowboys the product of a pumped up team playing a bitter division rival? Are the birds THAT good? are we in for a letdown? a hangover on a short week?

I think the offense is scary good. As long as the offensive line gives donovan time to operate and they convert better in the red zone, they will continue to put up points in bunches (genius. Westbrook will continue to be a monster and Desean Jackson will continue to put up numbers (and hold the ball until he actually crosses the goal line). It remains to be seen how the return of Reggie "hands like feet" Brown will help the offense. I'm not sure if he's really any better than jason avant, hank baskett or greg lewis.

the defense needs to tighten up. LBs and Dawkins have a bunch to prove today. gotta keep the steelers drives short, contain willie parker's running lanes and keep Big Ben in the pocket. Watch for the deep ball to Santonio Holmes and keep tabs on Hines Ward near the end zone. Keep coverage downfield on Heath Miller - particularly after how Jason Witten owned the LBs and Dawkins on Monday. Apparently Big Ben has an injured shoulder, so let's hope the DEs can get to him early and often and make him think about how much it hurts.

Eagles 24, Steelers 14

Our EPark Fightin' Quakers take on two teams today in Conference USA action: ... Parma Pink Flamingos and the Chicago Motors ... both games are projected Ws, but as we all know, anything can and will happen in the NFL. Tomlinson will probably play on Monday, but the projecctions fall short, i thnk. Playing QB roulette led me to starting Favre @ SD (got torched by Cutler last Sunday) over Warner (hot, hot, hot last week, but against a WEAK Dolphins squad) @ Wash. That's the thinking as of 9:30 a.m. Also concerned about McFadden getting No. 1 reps b/c of his injury. Let the games begin!

desean is da bomb

so it looks like the birds have a decent receiver in Desean Jackson, the rookie from Cal ... over 100 receiving and nearly another hundred in punt returns Sunday's carpet bombing of St. Louis.

if - and if not an if i'm condoning or looking forward to coming true - mcnabb is outta philly next year (as the pundits seem to think), i'll happily trade in my No. 5 for a No. 10 jersey. Gina already called it, but we'll have to talk.

Philly is STARVED for a star receiver. If he's the real deal and continues at a pro bowl level ... oh man, i'm geeked just thinking about it. But the last receiver in this town who could've been elected mayor totally f'ed it all up. Let's hope desean keeps the ego in check and doesn't pull a "TO."

by the way, the birds had three receivers over the century mark on sunday- Jackson (106), GLew (105) and Baskett (102). First time in nearly 50 years. Not bad for a bunch of has beens and never will bes ... i think reggie brown's hammy will be healing up pretty quickly. Doesn't hurt, either, that McNabb is 100 percent.

can't wait for monday vs. the cowboys.
